Sprint Training Drills – 3 Guaranteed Drills to Help You Become Lighting Quick

You need a “customized” workout
No single exercise is guaranteed to work for everybody. The reason? Athletic power is equal to force*velocity.
Some players already have plenty of velocity but little force-and vice versa. Therefore your program will be geared towards improving on whichever you are weakest in.
An athlete with ‘velocity’ has very fast contracting muscles… but without power it’s basically useless.
On the other side of the coin, many players are plenty strong… but their muscles don’t contract fast enough to take advantage of their strength.
So the formula is simple-if you need force than you require weight lifting–if you are lacking in velocity you need ‘plyometrics’. Here are 3 “sprint training drills” to help you get quicker now
DRILL #1) Squats
Of all the weight lifting exercises this is FAR AND AWAY the best. If you are lacking in power than there is nothing better you can do than squats
But it ONLY works when you do it the right way
What’s the right way? Lifting a heavy amount of weight and keep your sets within the 5-8 range. This is ideal for improving your power. Doing many repetitions with light weights DOES NOT improve your power at all.
DRILL #2) Box jumps
If you are lacking in muscle speed than this is your workout. For this just stand on top of a box roughly 12-18 inches high–and jump back and forth.
The split second you hit the ground… leap back on the box. Gather yourself-then jump off the other side and repeat. Simple but lethal.
DRILL #3) Sprinting
What better way to get quicker than by simply sprinting? This will not only strengthen your “fast twitch” muscles but also improve your coordination. Coordination is a key part of speed.
But keep you sprints SHORT
For reasons out of the scope of this article… sets longer than 8 seconds do nothing for your speed. Implement these “sprint training drills” and you will get results now.
